The third most important tool of the 'Four Treasures of the Calligraphy Study' (Chinese 文房四宝, Wen Fang sì bǎo) is an ink slab (砚, Yan). It was in traditional China the item which facilitated the scholar to produce ink on his own and is hence a very important tool for the applied technique. The ink consistency reflects the artist’s talent to ‘play’ with different components and textures within his artworks and thus is crucial for its authenticity. Our ink slab collection covers small, medium and large sizes of ink slabs and varies in its design from simple to Chinese engraved dragons and characters. Our ink slab enables you to press the ink into long sticks. These sticks are rubbed with ink slab with water until the desired color grade is reached. Our stones have a fine surface to avoid grinding the ink too coarse and damaging the bristles of the brush.
